Speeding Has Become the Norm for Many American Drivers

New research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety suggests that speeding has become increasingly normalized among American motorists, even as most drivers acknowledge that posted speed limits are appropriate. Three in ten drivers agreed with the idea that no one actually drives the speed limit, while many considered traveling 10 mph above the limit acceptable. Nearly half also believed that keeping pace with surrounding traffic is safer than following the posted speed limit. The findings are particularly concerning given the consequences of excessive speed. According to data cited by AAA from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding was a factor in nearly 30% of U.S. traffic fatalities in 2024. Drivers most commonly said they speed to get around slower vehicles, reach their destination faster, or avoid holding up traffic.

The study also highlights an important challenge for traffic safety professionals: drivers generally support measures that encourage safer speeds but become less supportive when those measures restrict their ability to choose how fast they drive. Nearly nine in ten respondents supported increased police presence in locations with a history or potential for speed-related crashes, while roughly seven in ten supported automated speed cameras in those areas. Drivers also preferred advisory Intelligent Speed Assistance systems that warn them when they are speeding over technology that actively limits vehicle speed. Even though more than 90% considered speed humps effective, fewer than half supported installing them in their own neighborhoods. The findings suggest that reducing speeding may require not only enforcement and technology, but also changing a driving culture in which motorists increasingly justify excessive speed based on the behavior of surrounding traffic.
