In Texas, transportation engineers are increasingly leveraging psychological design principles to nudge drivers toward safer behavior. TxDOT Traffic Safety Division staff explain that small but thoughtful design choices — such as wider pavement markings — do more than enhance visibility; they subtly influence driver perception. For example, wider lane markings can make the lane feel narrower, prompting drivers to slow down instinctively.
Beyond pavement markings, TxDOT is using a range of infrastructure-based safety tools: roundabouts reduce high-speed conflict points and encourage speed moderation by design; enhanced delineation with LED-illuminated signs help drivers navigate curves safely, particularly where run-off-road crashes are more common; and activated pedestrian devices like mid-block hybrid and rapid-flashing beacons improve driver awareness precisely when and where pedestrians need to cross. These countermeasures don’t rely solely on enforcement — instead, they guide behavior by shaping the driving environment in ways that align with human perception, attention, and instinct.
