Study Links Aggressive Car Advertising to Rising Speed-Related Crashes

A new study highlighted by Streetsblog USA found that modern vehicle advertising increasingly emphasizes speed, power, maneuverability, and aggressive driving behavior, while giving far less attention to safety. Researchers from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reviewed roughly 2,500 car commercials aired between 2018 and 2022 and discovered that 43 percent focused on performance-oriented themes. By comparison, only 8 percent emphasized safety. The report noted that ads featuring speeding or risky handling grew substantially during the study period, particularly among SUV advertisements, which increasingly portrayed large vehicles as high-performance machines rather than family transportation.

Researchers argue these marketing trends may contribute to the normalization of unsafe driving behaviors at a time when speeding-related fatalities remain a major traffic safety concern. According to the study, more than 11,000 people were killed in speed-related crashes, accounting for nearly one-third of all roadway deaths. IIHS officials expressed concern that commercials glamorizing extreme driving conditions and high-speed maneuvering reinforce dangerous cultural attitudes toward speeding, especially among impressionable audiences. The article also points out that countries such as the United Kingdom and France place stricter limits on vehicle advertising that promotes aggressive driving, suggesting the United States could benefit from stronger standards that prioritize roadway safety over performance marketing.
